If you're applying to a Master of Public Health (MPH) or related graduate program in the US, you'll almost certainly go through SOPHAS, the centralized application system built specifically for public health programs. Here's what it is, how it works, and what you need to know before you start.
What Is SOPHAS?
SOPHAS (Schools of Public Health Application Service) is a centralized platform that lets you apply to multiple public health programs through one application, rather than filling out separate forms for each school. It's run by Liaison and used by most CEPH-accredited public health schools and programs across the US, including MPH, MHA, PhD, DrPH, and many dual-degree programs.
There's also a related system, SOPHAS Express, used specifically for certificate and non-degree programs, with its own simpler fee structure.
How It Works
Create an account on the SOPHAS portal and select the programs you want to apply to.
Submit your materials once: transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal statement/essay, resume or CV, and standardized test scores (if required), and SOPHAS distributes them to each selected program.
Verification: SOPHAS reviews and verifies your transcripts and materials, which typically takes 2 to 4 weeks, so plan ahead of deadlines.
Once verified, your application is transmitted to each individual program for review. Programs may still request supplemental materials or a second, school-specific application on top of SOPHAS.
What You'll Need
- Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
- 2 to 3 letters of recommendation (number varies by program)
- Statement of purpose / personal statement (word limits vary, often 500 to 1500 words)
- Resume or CV
- GRE/GMAT scores, if required (many programs have moved to test-optional, but check each one)
Fees
SOPHAS charges a tiered fee: one price for your first program and a lower additional fee for each subsequent program you apply to in the same cycle. As of the most recent cycle, this is $155 for the first program and $65 for each additional one, though exact figures shift slightly year to year, so always confirm the current number on SOPHAS's own fee page rather than a school's page, which can lag behind.
A limited Fee Assistance Program offers waivers (financial-, service-, or international-based) for those who qualify, but you must request it before submitting your application, and it only covers your first program's fee, not additional ones.
Key Tips
Apply early. Many programs review on a rolling basis, so earlier applications often get earlier decisions and more funding consideration.
Tailor your materials per program. Uploads are program-specific, so your statement of purpose should speak to each program, not read as a generic copy-paste.
Not all public health programs use SOPHAS. Some schools (or specific program types, like dual-degrees or executive programs) require a separate, direct application instead. Always check the individual program's "How to Apply" page.
Track your SOPHAS status separately from school-specific portals. Many schools also want you to link a secondary application (like a Graduate School AppID) alongside your SOPHAS submission. Don't assume SOPHAS alone is "the whole application."
Bottom Line
SOPHAS simplifies applying to public health graduate programs by centralizing your core materials, but "centralized" doesn't mean "complete." Budget time for verification delays, double-check each program's specific add-on requirements, and apply as early in the cycle as you reasonably can.
